Ortho-K & Corneal Refractive Therapy (CRT): What You Need To Know

Ortho-K, Corneal refractive Therapy, Silicon Valley eye care physicians, SunnyvaleAt Silicon Valley Eye Physicians, our eye doctors are excited to introduce treatment for the correction of vision loss, including farsightedness, nearsightedness, and astigmatism. This treatment, called orthokeratology, or Ortho-K for short, involves the nighttime use of specialized "corneal reshaping" lenses--leading to daytimes spent with clearer vision, and without the need for contacts, glasses, or refractive surgery.

What is Ortho-K, and how does it work?

Ortho-K is a FDA-approved, non-invasive approach to improved eyesight. As you sleep with Ortho-K lenses on, your corneas are gently and temporarily reshaped to the specifications of your eye doctor's prescription. Upon awaking, you can remove the Ortho-K contact lenses and go about your day with better vision and without any additional need for daytime correction. For best results, Ortho-K lenses should be worn at night regularly.

Is Ortho-K Safe?

While not everyone is a candidate for Ortho-K therapy, it is found to be quite safe and comfortable for those who do use it. As with any contact lens use, there are small associated risks, however with proper hygiene these risks are greatly minimized.

Is Ortho-K Expensive?

The cost of Ortho-K therapy typically ranges from $800-$1500 for both eyes, plus the price of any replacement lenses. Many patients find the cost to be highly worthwhile, given the treatment's effectiveness, low risk of side effects, and non-invasive nature.

What is the difference between Ortho-K and Corneal Refractive Therapy (CRT)?

Ortho-K is similar to corneal refractive therapy (CRT). Many people have heard of Paragon CRT, a specific brand of reshaping lenses that was first to be FDA approved. Though Paragon CRT has a trademarked design and fit, its results are comparable to Ortho-K and is used for similar purposes.
