At Silicon Valley Eye Physicians, eye examinations and vision screenings are just a couple of the eye care services we have to offer to our clients in the areas of Santa Clara, CA and Sunnyvale, CA. With two convenient offices and more than 50 years of combined optometry experience among our staff, our team is here to assist you with all your eye and vision care needs.
When it comes to eye exams for adult women and men, we subscribe to the American Optometric Association (AOA) recommendation of one comprehensive eye exam every two years for adults between the ages of 18 and 60. Having eye exams with this level of frequency helps us to keep a close eye on any changes to your ocular health and also allows us to make sure your vision prescription is up-to-date. However, we will sometimes recommend more frequent eye exams (such as once every year) for those who have a history of eye/vision problems or a family history of such issues.
There are so many reasons as to why regular women's and men's eye exams are so important. For starters, did you know that eye exams are your first line of defense against long-term ocular conditions and diseases? When you have an eye exam done, our doctors will always be on a close watch for any potential early signs of eye problems. In fact, many of our diagnoses of ocular conditions and diseases are done as a result of "red flags" spotted during a routine eye exam. As a result, eye exams can help us diagnose these problems early, which help to increase chances for successful treatment and management. Some common eye conditions and diseases that may be spotted during an eye exam include:
Whether it has been awhile since you have had an eye exam or you have never had one done in our office, you may be wondering what to expect from your first appointment. To begin with, our staff will always take the time to get to know you, your medical/family history, and give you a chance to bring up any problems you have noticed with your eyes or vision.
From there, we will get into your eye examination, which involves a number of visual acuity measurements and tests. This is known as the vision screening portion of your exam, which is important for measuring your peripheral vision, pupil response to light, and other important factors. This is also where we will ask you to read from the letter chart on the wall and check for near-sightedness, far-sightedness, and other common vision conditions.
From there, we will perform a number of specific eye tests, such as examining the retina and overall health of the eyes with a bio microscope. In some cases, pupil-dilating drops may be needed to check the health of the retinas and other parts of the eye. If needed, additional testing may also be recommended at the end of your appointment if any potential problems are spotted.
