Keratoconus and Medically Necessary Lenses

Keratoconus Lenses and proceduresKeratoconus is an eye disease, which results in a progressive thinning of the cornea. Normal outward pressure within the eye causes the cornea to progressively bulge into a cone-like shape. These changes cause irregularities in the corneal shape and can have a dramatic impact on one’s vision causing blur, distortion, and glare. As keratoconus progresses, normal everyday activities such as driving and reading can become difficult to perform. Many patients are initially unaware they have keratoconus and see their eye doctor because of increasing blur or progressive changes in their prescription.

Typically keratoconus affects both eyes and changes start at puberty becoming noticeable in the late teens to early twenties. Progression continues until the patients late thirties; however rates and severity will vary from patient to patient.

In most cases, glasses no longer provide satisfactory vision. Keratoconus patients usually require contact lenses to improve vision. There are a variety of contact lens designs available from custom specialty soft and rigid lenses, to hybrid lenses, and Scleral lenses. Laser guided lens fitting performed at Silicon Valley Eye Physicians offers the most advanced way to fit keratoconic patients in an effort to maintain corneal health and allow for the best comfort and vision possible.
