Glaucoma Treatment with our Sunnyvale Optometrist

Man with glaucoma

We take Glaucoma treatment at all of our locations in the Valley because we want you to care about your eyesight.

It is very important to have a regular eye exam as one ages because Glaucoma has no warning signs and is most common among older adults. If diagnosed, we have many treatments at our disposal to ensure any damage caused by the disease is kept to a minimum.

The aim of glaucoma treatment is to lower the blood pressure in the eye. Depending on the stage of Glaucoma found treatment begins with prescription eyedrops which help decrease pressure by improving how you eye produces and drains fluids. Some of these include:

Glaucoma Treatment Eye Drops

  • Beta-blockers - Examples include timolol (Timoptic,Betimol) and betaxolol (Betoptic).
  • Prostaglandin -  increase the outflow of the fluid in the eye and reduces eye pressure. Examples include bimatoprost (Lumigan) and latanoprost (Xalatan).
  • Carbonic anhydrase inhibitors - though seldom used for glaucoma, these drugs can sometimes reduce the production of fluid in the eye. Examples include orzolamide (Trusopt) and adbrinzolamide (Azopt).
  • Alpha-adrenergic agonists - reduces the production of aqueous humor and increase outflow of the fluid in the eye. Examples include brimonidine (Alphagan) and apraclonidine (Iopidine).
  • Carbonic anhydrase inhibitors - These too are seldom used for Glaucoma treatment but can at times reduce the production of fluid in your eye. Examples include brinzolamide (Azopt) and dorzolamide (Trusopt) .

Other Glaucoma Treatment Options

Oral medications - Should prescription eye drops not lower your eye pressure to the desired level, we also prescribe oral medication. This is most often a carbonic anhydrase inhibitor.

Surgery and other therapies

Other treatment options, if needed, can include:

  • Filtering surgery - this uses a surgical procedure called a trabeculectomy (truh-bek-u-LEK-tuh-me) by which an eye surgeon creates a small opening in the sclera, or white of the eye.
  • Laser therapy - Laser trabeculoplasty (truh-BEK-u-low-plas-tee) is performed for people with open-angle glaucoma and is performed in our offices.
  • Electrocautery - this minimally invasive procedure removes tissue from the trabecular meshwork using a small device called a Trabecutome.

Glaucoma is one of the leading causes of blindness in the United States. It can occur at any age but is more common in older adults. Be sure and schedule a regular eye exam to ensure the best vision you can possibly have.
