Do you dream of one day being able to wake up in the morning and not have to reach for your glasses or contact lenses to see your alarm clock, your loved ones, or the sunrise?
Modern science has ushered in laser vision correction, a breakthrough in vision-improving technology. At no time in history has there been more advancement in the correction of vision than in the last 30 years, and laser vision correction has been the most exciting advance in the last decade. This procedure can correct nearsightedness (myopia), farsightedness (hyperopia), and astigmatism.
At Silicon Valley Eye Physicians we can help you reduce or eliminate your dependence on glasses and contact lenses. Our physicians and staff provide the highest standards in patient care and satisfaction. We want to help you obtain the knowledge you need to make an informed decision about whether laser vision correction is right for you.
Laser in Situ Keratomileusis (LASIK) is an extremely effective outpatient procedure that involves using an instrument called a microkeratome to create a very thin, hinged corneal flap. Next, ultraviolet light and high-energy pulses from the excimer laser are used to gently reshape the interior surface of the cornea. The corneal flap is then placed back into its original position where it bonds without the need for sutures. The procedure itself is completely painless and takes only a few minutes to complete.
Space age wavefront technology can be combined with LASIK to deliver laser eye surgery results that are customized to each patient’s unique eyes. Wavefront technology, originally developed for use in astrophysics, works by charting the visual aberrations that appear when a beam of eye-safe light is passed through a patient’s eye. It then uses this data to construct a three-dimensional map of each patient’s unique visual aberrations, including both the lower-order aberrations (farsightedness, nearsightedness, and astigmatism) and higher-order aberrations that have been connected to problems with glare, halos, and other night vision problems. Wavefront customized LASIK can be used to treat many higher-order aberrations currently untreatable with glasses, contacts, or standard LASIK.
As with any medical procedure, you should be informed and understand the possible complications and risks involved. At Silicon Valley Eye Physicians we believe that informing you of potential risks is an important part of patient care. Some of the risks that can occur include infection, corneal halos, under/over correction, and corneal flap problems. There are risks with any procedure, but because laser vision correction uses a cool beam of light that is computer controlled, there is little room for error. Worldwide, more than 3 million people have successfully undergone the laser vision correction procedure. In a recent study, over 98 percent of patients could see well enough to pass a driver’s test without glasses or contacts. There is a less than 1 percent chance of any serious vision-threatening complications.
Today, eye physicians all over the world employ laser vision correction to successfully correct nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. Dr. David Mark is specially trained in laser vision correction, and he performs all LASIK procedures at the Horizon Laser Center. This eye laser center provides the highest quality technology and has a well-earned reputation for excellence. Our physicians use the VISX Smooth Scan Excimer Laser.

Laser vision correction uses a cool beam of light from an excimer laser to reshape the cornea in order to correct nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism.
The goals of the procedure are to reduce or eliminate the need for glasses and contact lenses.
LASIK stands for Laser In Situ Keratomileusis. LASIK is a procedure that consists of a corneal flap being made by a microkeratome to expose the inner layer of the cornea. The laser is then applied to the inner cornea to remove corneal tissue. The amount of corneal tissue removed depends on the amount of correction needed. The corneal flap is than laid back in place to restore the corneal surface. The procedure takes only a few minutes.
The procedure itself is generally painless. After the procedure, there may be some mild to moderate pain for one to three days, which may be relieved by oral medications and topical eye drops.
LASIK generally provides good vision the next day, enabling patients to return to work.
The most common side effects are dry eyes and visual fluctuations. In most cases, such side effects will last from one to three weeks. A more detailed discussion of these issues will take place during your comprehensive eye screening.
How do I get started if I am interested in laser vision correction?
The next step is to call and schedule your free screening evaluation, including corneal topography and thickness measurements. This comprehensive screening with one of our doctors, which will take approximately an hour and a half, will specifically determine your eligibility for laser vision correction. The eye exam consists of a thorough evaluation and analysis of your eyes and your visual system. We will help clarify any more questions you may have.
